Neil plays and teaches the bassoon, piano, clarinet and ukulele. He studied the bassoon at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Meyrick Alexander, Robin O’Neill and Ian Cutthill, and the contra bassoon with Gordon Laing, graduating in 2001.
Neil first joined DaCapo in 1998 and taught with the Foundation until 2006 when he branched out into music educational publishing, holding positions as Music Education Editor at A&C Black, Boosey & Hawkes and Music Sales until 2011. In 2012, Neil returned to teaching and DaCapo.
During his time with DaCapo Neil has taught all ages from Early Years through to adults. He teaches at the flagship Saturday Centre, and has also been involved with DaCapo’sschool programmes – teaching from Nursery through to Year 6, rollout projects in Norfolk and Kent; he currently runs the Wren Academy school orchestra on behalf of DaCapo.
Neil also teaches for Haringey Music Service, where he is a Woodwind Course Leader for their Whole-Class Instrumental Teaching projects (also known as ‘Wider Opportunities’). In addition, he finds time to squeeze in a number of private students across London.
As well as teaching, Neil works as freelance musician, performing with orchestras, chamber groups, for theatre, recording sessions and at music festivals.
